Set in the picturesque heather-clad mountains near Balmoral Castle, the Braemar Highland Games has become an annual event for the Queen and her family. On her first visit to the Braemar Highland Games in September 1981 Diana wears a woolen suit in a rust, brown and black plaid with puff sleeves designed by Caroline Charles completed with a black velvet tam-o’-shanter.

The Prince and Princess of Wales had to endure heavy rain during a visit to St David’s and Carmarthen, Wales, in 1981. The Princess wears a  camel-coloured tweed wrapover coat by Caroline Charles with a white ruffled silk blouse and a velvet feathered skullcap with a fine dotted face veil by John Boyd.

Newlyweds, Charles, Prince of Wales and Princess Diana, travelled from Buckingham Palace to Waterloo Station, London where they boarded the royal train as they set off on their honeymoon. Diana’s going away outfit by Bellville Sassoon was ordered with two jackets –one with short sleeves, one with long. She wore the short sleeved version on her wedding day. It is made of canteloupe-melon colour silk with white organza collar and cuffs.  she matched it with a hat by John Boyd with ostrich feathers.

The future Princess of Wales paid a visit to Cheltenham Police HQ in Gloucestershire, England on March 27, 1981. Later that day Diana poses for her official engagement picture with Her Majesty the Queen and her fiancé. On the second day of Royal Ascot, June 17 1981, Diana wears a delicate peach crepe georgette skirt and top by Benny Ong. The suit is worn with a softly flounced, cream blouse and leather belt. A cream, straw hat with an arrangement of apricot-coloured flowers completes the look.

Diana’s first Ascot, in June 1981. On 18th June 1981 she wears a Andy Pandy style suit designed by Bellville Sassoon consisting of a scarlet slim skirt and sleeveless three-quarter-length coat and a bold, red and white candy striped organza blouse with a large collar and bow. A red boater with white silk daisies at the back completes the look.

Princess Diana, One Day One Dress: 4th November 1981, Victoria & Albert Museum, London

The Princess of Wales opened with Prince Charles the Gonzaga exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in November 1981. Buckingham Palace announced that day that the 20-year-old Princess is expecting a baby in June.
Diana wears a silk chiffon romantic ballgown by Bellville Sassoon. The dress is in feminine pastel shades of blue, pink and white, it has an off-the-shoulder neckline edged in satin bows. A wide sash is worn. Small silver beads are intermittently sewn on to the dress to create subtle shimmer.
