The Princess of Wales arrives at the London premiere of In Love and War at the Empire, Leicester Square, London in February 1997, wearing this stunning full length dark blue lace dress by Catherine Walker. The dress was low-cut with satin straps, sheer floral lace and a suggestive cream lace panel at the back. The film, directed by Diana’s friend Sir Richard Attenborough, was preceded by a showing of the TV documentary Diary Of A Princess, about Diana’s experiences in Angola.
On 23rd April 1997 Diana invited Catherine Walker and her team of dressmakers to meet her at Kensington Palace. The designer created so many pieces for Diana over the years that the Princess’s style and her wardrobe requirements were to influence Walker’s work in general. The Princess wears a black pinstriped double-breasted pantsuit.
The Princess of Wales was at Milan’s gothic cathedral on 22 July 1997 for the memorial service of her friend Gianni Versace, who once called her “The Mother Teresa and Cindy Crawford of our time”. She wears his black shift-dress and leather Kelly bag with Medusa heads, re-named “the Diana bag”.
Diana comforted Elton John during the service. By a tragic twist of fate, he was to sing at her funeral service just a few weeks later.
